Some students are taken hostage in the Karatas high school isolated by snow. When they learn it will take two days for the army to reach them, a team of adults led by math teacher Tazshi, decides to take matters into their own hands.
Yerzhanov's world is fully present: the fictive city of Karatas, Beckett-like visual existential immensities, the traditional tragicomedy, the changes in tone, the well assimilated influences ranging from Jarmush to Melville, the loser anti-heroes, both touching and ridiculous. Assault twice refers to Jarmusch, with its title and with the snowy lockdown, a direct nod to The Thing. Beyond the obvious reference to high school killings, the poignant novelty in Yerzhanov's universe is the spectacle of adults behaving like children, willing to give their lives for the younger generation, as if to expiate the sad heritage they've left them.
