In his family or in school, Jose Maria, a sensitive and intelligent 17 year old, can’t find his place and is rejected and singled out for his lack of masculinity. Little by little he acknowledges his desire to be a woman.
It’s often thought that Victoria Abril was discovered by Almodovar, but the filmmaker who understood her best, giving her varied and powerful roles, remains undoubtedly Vicente Aranda. At 18 years of age, for this first major role, she reveals her great sensitivity and a singular fragile force. Aranda, ahead of his time, adresses a taboo issue, transition, and he of course does it with all his anarchist pertinency, stigmatizing stupidity and ignorance, while never forsaking his heroine’s point of view. Also present is Almodovar’s fetish trans actress, Bibi Andersen.
