In 17th century Japan, Sasuke Sarutobi, a renowned samouraï, is caught in the middle of a clan war, not knowing which side to choose. In this political espionage imbroglio, can he remain neutral?
Adapted from a novel by Koji Nakada, Samouraï Spy constitutes proof that Shinoda can succeed in making a classic entertainment action film, fast paced and as always superbly directed. If Samouraï Spy may be his most accessible film, it sometimes adopts a surprisingly intimate vein. Shinoda nonetheless doesn’t efface himself, proposing multiple allusions to Japan’s situation, trapped between the USA and the USSR.
