URSS, 1938. While Stalin starts eliminating his own security staff, Volkonogov, one of his most faithful agents, specialized in obtaining confessions from the enemies of the state by any means, makes a run for it, when he learns he’s condemned. As he realizes the extent of the crimes he’s committed, his escape turns into a quest for atonement: he searches for the families of his last victims to ask for their forgiveness.
A torturer’s redemption, for sure a serious and delicate subject that Natalia Merkulova and Alekseï Chupov choose to tackle without austerity, under the angle of a symbolic fantasy tale and spectacular entertainment. While condemning stalinism, the filmmakers, with their baroque visions, oppose it to a race against time with concrete and metaphysical stakes.
