When Mila tells her father that she’s in love with Noel, and that she carries his child, the stern patriarch tightens his hold upon her. Though married, he forces her to remain in the family home until the bitter end.
Inspired by a true story, Kisapmata starts as a psychodrama that turns into an endless nightmare. The trap gradually closes down on the couple, like a spiderweb. The highly claustrophobic, direction locks his héroine in this house, haunted by evil incarnate. She keeps escaping, always to come back. If De Leon castigates the monstrosities of patriarchy, the use of symbols reveals its true horror: He goes beyond the brute and sordid facts, relying on a dark imagination, crossed by dreams that reveal dark secrets and where the tragic heroine seems under the spell of a malediction.
