When the coronavirus reaches Karatas, a kind and corrupted cop, indifferent to crimes and misdemeanors, but specialized in bribes, is reluctantly obliged...to uphold the law.
The world is an absurdity. Yerzhanov turns it into cinema. 2016: the filmmaker invents a pest plague in his Kafkaian Chuma v aule Karatas (The Plague at Karatas village). 2021 : reality surpasses fiction. The opportunity was too good not to film Karatas falling prey to both the coronavirus and corruption, which aren't so different. The filmmaker chooses to depict this confrontation between the bent cop’s and the authorities’ moralities, as a buddy movie lost in a carnival. It’s best to laugh about everything, but the approach remains cathartic: ridiculing the times, pushing its chaos towards surrealism, means exorcising it.
