A couple of influencers are invited to a cruise on an ostentatious yacht, in the company of aging nouveaux riches, served by a crew devoted to their every whim. Suddenly a storm of epic proportions topples the established order.
With this film, which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes this year, and is the last part of a trilogy about the crisis of modern masculinity, after Snow Therapy and The Square (also a Palme d’Or laureate), Swede Ruben Östlund pumps up the volume of satire even further and basks in unleashed social allegory that the context of a luxury cruise enables him to deploy, with jubilant and wildly contagious irony. Every scene hits hard, every character is a cruelly eloquent offbeat caricature. When this despicable micro-society with no captain capsizes, the result is appalling, but hilarity prevails.
