Born in 1981, Ehsan Khoshbakht knows farsi films only from poor quality illegal VHS copies, as they have been outlawed for years. As a historian and a co-director of Il Cinema Ritrovato, the prestigious restored film festival of Bologna, he went searching for those lost films, detailing their history, from the origins in 1953 to their end in 1979. He presents a full panorama illustrated by numerous archives and analyzes all the thematic paradoxes of a cinema that wasn't too progressive though quite scandalous in its representations, and even more so to the islamic power who chose to eradicate it. Ehsan Khoshbakht resurrects the missing through art. And if through the life and death of a genre Filmfarsi leads us through a nation's tragedy, this very intimate film is also a true ode to all forms of culture, and its survival, despite the will of its oppressors. "When cinemas were destroyed the ghosts of old films were let loose on the streets." Fascinating.
