Kakabakaba Ka Ba? is an anomaly in Mike de Leon’s filmography, and what an anomaly ! This improbable patchwork, that happily mixes noir film, vaudeville, culminating in a disco science fiction musical comedy, is the filmmaker’s wildest venture, with the assumed stupidity of its humor is only rivaled by the director's permanent inventivity. Beyond the savory referential nods- from The Blues Brothers to Batman - the Tintin like twist and turns, the very ZAZ absurd gags; the filmmaker lambasts hisgovernement, notably taking a poke at the Japanese and Chinese hold on the country’s affairs. Audacious and totally unclassifiable.
