Richie Bravo, an old Austrian crooner in his sixties plays gigs for retired pensioners in shabby hotels in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast. He prostitutes himself with elderly women to make ends meet. One day his daughter Tessa, who he’s hardly ever seen, appears.
Almost 10 years after Paradise: Hope, Ulrich Seidl returns to fiction, along with his fetish actor, Michael Thomas, for this first opus of a diptych. Renowned as a cold misanthropist, Seidl nonetheless moves us with this anti-hero without morals, a day-to-day survivor searching for love. The foggy seaside resort, with its emptiness of the low season, seems to deprive the Mediterranean Sea of its sunshine and offers a surreal beauty as a mirror to individual loneliness. Seidl locks his characters in symmetry, exploring the philosophical surface of a frame where the living wander, completely dead-eyed.
