In the early 90’s, after a truce among gangs, the port city of Huam is on the brink of turmoil. Hee-Soo, a third rate gangster, faithful to his old boss for years, has decided to go it alone. In an atmosphere of suspicion and gang wars where everyone wants to come out winning, Hee-Soo wil try to save the day, and his life and soul.
In the great tradition of gangster movies flirting with tragedy, with their anti-heroes trapped in unstoppable mechanics, this adaptation of Kim Un-su’s novel stands out as a worthy heir to De Palma’s Carlito’s Way or Fukazaku’s yakuza eigas. If Cheon Myoung-kwan’s first feature film holds its place in the prestigious lineage of elegant and violent mafia epics, it shines by its introspection, its solitary Melvillian course where intimate suffering becomes more important than the genre’s archetypes. With his sad eyes, like a foreigner in his own life, Jung Woo is extraordinary and very moving.
