After several years in an institution, young Susan Shelley returns to live with her father and stepmother in the family domain, where her mother died before her eyes.
At first an imitation of machination thrillers with its young heiresses pushed to madness, Robert Sherman’s formidable script, reveals itself to be much crueler and perverse. Gordon conceived his film as a venomous fairy tale set in a noxious gothic mood, superbly served by its flamboyant photography. All the adults seem potentially hostile and threatening to this fragile teengager, played, for added discomfort, by the director's daughter. Probably his masterpiece.
