Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Wings, Peter Gabriel, all those extraordinary record covers that haunt us, have one source: Hipgnosis, alias Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell. These brilliant resourceful creators understood that they “could make a work of art and sell it as a record cover”.
For his first documentary, Anton Corbjin delivers a splendid and poignant portrait, centered on Po’s testimony, mixing interviews of the artists today and archives, revealing the secrets behind famous artworks often through animated sequences. It’s a depiction of a golden age that saw the birth of progressive rock, an age of excess and creative explosions. Po and Storm were representative of an era when rockstars and graphic designers were artists.
