Joanna and her family have just moved into a residential area in the charming town of Stepford. She meets her friendly neighbors, happy housewives in bliss. But the American way of life hides many a secret.
It’s essential to rediscover Bryan Forbes’ filmography, among which gems stand out like Séance on a Wet Afternoon and The Whisperers. Supported by Katarine Ross’s performance, The Stepford Wives is also one of these gems. Adapted from Ira Levin, the author of Rosemary’s Baby (in which the heroine endures her social isolation in a similar way), this is a sci-fi masterpiece: terrifying, ultra political, often imitated (Get Out) but never equalled.
