Brand new master
Bona is in love with a low grade extra who never seems to make it in the movie industry. For him she gives up everything, incurring her father’s ire. But the chains she breaks are just foretellers of another entrapment.
Lino Brocka signs a sumptuous social melodrama as only he can, leaving no doubt about its fatal ending. Avoiding lyrical emphasis, portraying fatalism with raw realism, he offers the portrait of a woman, entrapped by her passions and her social status. This is no emancipation story, but one about eternal submission to the patriarchal system, be it familial or romantic, and about the incapacity to overcome it. Dark is dark.
