Elizabeth lands on an isolated island to rejoin the convent founded by her recently deceased father; she needs to think about the place’s future. But she soon understands that the nuns are somewhat devious…
An island, the sea, an ancient religion and a realm of constant hallucinations. Shot in Ukraine by a young italian director living in the United Kingdom, Dark Waters sends back to Dreyer and Tarkowski as much as Argento, blending graphic violence, visions of black silhouettes cut out on the sky, and end of the world landscapes. Linear narration disappears in favor of wanderings through another dimension, a suffocating dive into darkness and the unknown. One thing is certain: thanks to him, we get a glimpse of Lovecraftian unspeakable. A film that's become a classic and hasn’t aged a bit.
