Anil, a former street performer, dreams of a career in Bombay and of revenge for the humiliation of his mother by the rich and evil Oberai. Noticed by a disco club owner, he gains a reputation as a disco dancer…
In this Bollywood version of Saturday Night Fever, nothing’s missing: from the rise of a lower class young man to Mithun Chakraborty’s moves imitating John Travolta. But of course with an extra dose of melodrama, languorous romantic moments, over dramatic acting, song and dance scenes, kitsch and much more color! And even an improbable version of Video Killed the Radio Star. It isn’t a movie, it's a glittering disco ball.

J.G. Thirlwell

In the late 90s I used to travel to the Jackson Heights section of Queens NY to dig through the selections of $5 Bollywood DVDs, to educate myself on all the classics of the genre - The Jewel Thief, Sholay, Don and many more. During my digging I discovered Disco Dancer. I’ve given many copies of this away as gifts. A kaleidoscopic, improbable tale of a young man's rise to and fall from stardom, it features a jaw-dropping plot and dazzling trippy dance sequences.
