In 1919, in Copenhagen, Karoline, a young factory worker, struggles to survive, between deceptions and false hopes. Pregnant, she befriends Dagmar, a charismatic and mysterious woman who runs a clandestine adoption agency. She accepts to work as a wet nurse for her.
It's likely no coincidence that the title of the latest film by the creator of the remarkable Sweat, clearly echoes his compatriot H.C. Andersen’s The Little Match Girl, similarly blending a poignant social commentary with fairy tale lore. A dark fairy tale is exactly what this masterful fable about individual survival in a dehumanized world is, with its Cinderella and its disappointing Prince Charming, its witch and monsters. From a sensational news story, the filmmaker develops a fascinating variation around monstrosity under all its guises, from face to soul, to better erase the borders between good and evil. A fantastic auditory and visual experience.
