In a not too distant future ravaged by famine, agriculture has become one of the main stakes of the war. Halley Freeman and her family are the last descendants of Afro-American farmers that settled in rural areas of Canada after the civil war. They fight back against savage militias intent on stealing their 40 acres of land.
The best post-apocalyptic movies are the ones that mirror our present. Like Jordan Peele, the Afro-Canadian filmmaker, already the creator of the series Utopia Falls, uses scifi and horror as a metaphysical and political reflection space. Breaking the silence of nature, violence is gradually unleashed. Tense and oppressive, 40 acres would be nothing without the dazzling Danielle Deadwyler — a magnificent, defiant heroine, fierce and desperate.
