Now a grown woman, Emma travels through her memories, back to the totalitarian Czechoslovakia of the 80s, when her alcoholic mother abandoned her, and she went from orphanage to foster home before ending up in a detention center. Yet the hope remained of a father waiting for her in the USA.
It took Viktor Taus twenty years to create this symphony of resilience where the convulsive journey towards childhood trauma - mirroring the trauma of a nation - is painted with the vivid colors of dreams. A deconstructed narration, schizophrenic split screens, glitchy images, Girl America shows stupefying audacity, initiating a dialog between Serebrennikov’s formal vertigos and Malick’s elegies. Viktor Taus rekindles our faith in a cinema still capable of surprising us and reinventing itself.
