Accompanying his mother, a teacher in a very strict military academy, a young boy endures bullying and beatings from his classmates, before adopting a disturbing behavior himself.
After circling around the genre for some time, Adilkhan Yerzhanov was bound to make his horror film. While Cadet adheres perfectly to horror movie conventions, complete with apparitions and possessed voices, it fully uses fantasy’s metaphorical and rebellious dimensions, with the terror in the story reflecting the terror of History. Spellbinding, suffocatingly slow, the director declares his love for Kubrick’s The Shining, while imposing his own framing of characters at the edge of the screen and his masterful use of space. A requiem for dead children, by a Yerzhanov at the top of his game.
