A lonely gravedigger, who reeks of corpses even at night, finally meets the man of her dreams… who drowns tragically at sea. Mad with bereavement, she'll use science to try to bring him back to life, without measuring the consequences.
In the manner of a female Frank Henenlotter, shooting in 16mm film with a tiny budget but an immense heart, before and behind the camera, Grace Glowicki (also the heroine of Honey Bunch, featured in the competition) allows her love for freaks to transpire. Her Dead Lover consecrates the triumph of women in a reappropriation of the genre without gimmicks: a horror touching the intimate, totally camp, a tornado of devastating raw humor and putrefied poetry. The filmmaker could very well yell out the title of Emil Ferris’ graphic novel: “My Favorite Thing Is Monsters!” So could we.
