Brand new master
Settled in a fishermen’s village where she has found work, Oryū has promised to give up the yakuza lifestyle. But the bullying of the villagers by local bigwigs may force her to change her mind.
Biography of a Gambling Hall takes introspection even further, through the use of more elaborate characters questioning their roles within a collective story, and on the moral stance they must adopt in the face of injustice. Idealized in the figure of the Red Peony, the yakuza sometimes takes the guise of a Japanese Robin Hood. Kōzaku Yamashita’s masterly direction of this episode is stunningly beautiful, with its almost Shakespearean dilemmas. And once again, what a finale!
