After all his attempts to end his life, Professor Hichcock, a spiritualism aficionado, was bound to have his wishes fulfilled. His doctor, also his wife’s lover, administers the lethal dose. But his ghost returns to haunt the culprits.
Majestuous candelabras, a haunted music box, curtains billowing in the wind, terrified eyes… All these delectable details contribute in making The Ghost a gem of Italian gothic films inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. But if you read between the lines, the writing’s global misanthropy corrupts archetypes, setting a deliquescent atmosphere, where hatred throttles sentiment, dragging everyone towards the grave. It’s perhaps the movie in which the expressivity of Barbara Steele’s eyes is best exploited. A masterpiece to rediscover in a restored 4K copy.
