A nameless silent killer comes back from the war to a city contaminated by corruption. He finds the wife and son of his brother, who’s gone missing. Alone against all odds, he goes searching for him.
How can Yerzhanov be so prolific without ever making a bad film? Leaving Karatas behind, the filmmaker sets his noir film into urban night, its lights, its men, its ghosts. His sleepwalking hero recalls the one from Drive, but he draws mainly from western movie mythology, from the first Eastwood and Corbucci films, with men whose eyes reflect the twilight of the world, hiding pain behind their silence. Carried by a score much inspired by Giorgio Moroder and Ryūichi Sakamoto, and a visual style reminiscent of Michael Mann, Moor delivers another headstrong masterpiece, vampirized by its glances and gestures.
