A congressman and historian, left by his wife, locks himself in his office and lets his imagination roam free, blending plunges into intimacy and historical fantasies.
In this adaptation of his own novel, Robert Lapoujade pushes the experimental nature of his previous feature film even further, as he does its rebellious impertinence and eclectic chaos. In what other movie can you see Joan of Arc’s trial, SM erotica, live representations of Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings, and a one eyed Jean-Pierre Mocky all sharing the screen? Often hilarious, always blasphemous, rebel Lapoujade deconstructs to better convey his century: he also reveals its true philosophical substance, launching into a raging satire against the pretensions of historians. For the filmmaker, the last word belongs to Socrates: “I know that I know nothing.”
