When the British Philip Ridley sets his story in an America straight out of an Andrew Wyeth painting, he delivers a cruel tale that he himself defines as a “mythical interpretation of childhood”. Never has a coming of age story been as terrible and depressing as the one of this innocent whose inner world is submerged by adult lies. And when Ridley ventures into folk horror, it’s only a chilling misunderstanding. This masterpiece has not aged, and confirms its cult movie status.
