Devastated by her husband’s mysterious disappearance, Maryam lives only in the hope of his return, everyday fragilising her relationship with her bewildered daughter. Between the strange phenomena appearing in her apartment, and her brother in law’s constant advances, she begins to lose her grip on reality.
The dazzling actress from A Separation carries and embodies this splendid fantastic solar poem about unacceptable loss. The Iranian filmmaker uses a subtle metaphorical cinematic language, evoking masculine and religious oppression. When wandering takes precedence over story, the imaginary landscape illustrates the depths of the soul. The dream-like contemplative visions evoke both Abbas Kiarostami’s elegiac cinema and André Delvaux’s surreal wanderings.
