In order to cover his debts, hopeless loser Azamat drags his wife Tansho into an unprecedented scam: to make believe she has terminal cancer to receive donations. But the lie goes viral and the amounts reached by the fundraising campaign will not attract only compassionate eyes.
With cruelty, black humor and astounding cynicism, Aitore Zholdaskali uses the thriller as a satirical tool to criticize capitalism’s use of social networks as ideal tools to manipulate the poor. Sicko is a Korean style Kazakh movie, exploiting the unescapable wheels of fate with a violence and a radicalism reminiscent of Kim Ki-duk et Park Chan-wook. It questions the contamination of evil as well as our propension to marry the hero’s point of view, as far as it might lead us. And it hurts real bad.
