During the last days of World War II, as Germany sinks into chaos and arbitrary executions, Willi Herold, a young deserter, flees his fate. To protect himself from the cold he dons a captain’s uniform. Several soldiers start following this new leader, who, caught up in his role, commits the unspeakable.
We didn’t expect to see a German filmmaker swallowed up by Hollywood return with such a journey into the heart of darkness. One year after Allegiant, Robert Schwentke signs a dizzying reflection on the contamination of evil, through the true destiny of a man, possessed by the uniform he’s wearing, who becomes even worse than those chasing him. This radical and chilling film, with its impressive formal mastery, anticipates, in its more philosophical dimension, The Zone of Interest.
