Wishing to prolong the aesthetic experience of Barbarella while competing with Star Wars, Dino De Laurentiis finally entrusted this adaptation of Alex Raymond’s comic strip to Mike Hodges. Far removed from his previous feature Get Carter, the filmmaker nonetheless infused the film with a constant British tongue-in-cheek irony. We’re plunged into a psychedelic pulp ocean, subdued by sublime ink skies, demented sets by Danilo Donati and… Queen! In this colorful space peplum, Max von Sydow plays a fabulous intergalactic Fu Manchu, while Ornella Muti, a rebel princess, hypnotises each scene by her presence. A delight.
