Three actresses—Liz, Marianne, and Gunilla—embark on a tour to perform Aristophanes' Lysistrata. Though two thousand years separate the play from their own time, their rehearsals gradually reveal just how it echoes their personal lives.
Surrounded by several performers from the "Bergman troupe," and herself an actress for the director, Mai Zetterling could have settled for merely engaging in a dialogue with his cinema. The Girls goes far beyond that. Behind its fascinating theatrical setup and splendid declaration of love to actresses, the film launches a vibrant call for women's emancipation. With Zetterling, the staged revolt becomes an invitation to reshape reality, proof that even when advances seem slight, art, by conversing across centuries, can remain a powerful lever for change.
