1995. The future. After a three year exile, a member of a disbanded police unit returns to haunt the city, looking for his former comrades and his enemies.
The first live action movie by Mamoru Oshii, this cursed film is reborn with this restored version thanks to crowdfunding by thousands of devoted fans. Defying classification, The Red Spectacles inaugurates the Kerberos militia saga and imposes itself as a laboratory for a cinema that follows no rules but its own. With a score by Kenji Kawai, it announces both the contemplative melancholy and dystopia of Avalon and the grotesque slapstick of Terayama’s underground theater. At the end of the film, we’re left with just one certainty: we can’t tell if we’ve just seen a hallucinated visual delirium… or if we dreamt it.
