Charles Serking, an anarchist and nihilist poet wanders around the Los Angeles underbelly. He meets Cass, a lost and masochistic prostitute with a hypnotic gaze. In each other's company, these two battered souls seem to rediscover a fragile taste for living.
Ferreri sparked a scandal with this adaptation of Bukowski’s semi autobiographical novel. More than forty years later, the film has lost none of its subversive strength or its disturbing power. The filmmaker marvelously captures the writer’s tragic rawness and his melody of despair, as he pushes his melancholy to a sadness that ultimately consumes everything. Opposite a masterful Ben Gazzara, as Bukowski’s transparent alter-ego, Ornella Muti gives herself body and soul to the role of Cass, too beautiful for such an ugly world. A dark gem, set on a ring of sex, alcohol, death… and love.
