Chang Er embarks on a journey to the far side of the moon to find her missing husband, a legendary archer gone to save the dying sun. She meets a stranded bandit from earth.
The filmmaker from Singapore begins with a tribute to the Hong Kong movies that captivated him as a child to better make his own creation with breathtaking inventiveness, as bold in its narration as in its dazzling visuals. His fantasy world borrows from the rhythms of ancient Chinese poetry, where spiritual quest, epic verve and a melancholy of impermanence constantly echo one another. A whirlwind of cosmic fantasy with lunar landscapes, House on the Moon evokes Danny Boyle’s Sunshine revisited by Wong Kar-wai. This fusion of period film and language musicality, supported by a flamboyant aesthetic, recalls the manner in which Ashes of Time reinvented wu xia pian in its time. At this level, one can truly speak of a work of art.
