After hitting a man with her car and fleeing the scene, Brenda, an insomniac security agent sent to work in a morgue, is assaulted by ghosts all through the night.
By adapting Morgue, the Uruguayan film by Hugo Cardozo, Ollalo Rubio cleverly revisits the haunted movie genre, with a classical approach leaving a lot of room to atmosphere, fear of silence and shadows. His camera prowls through corridors using superb tracking shots worthy of John Carpenter. As virtually the only human presence during most of the movie, Natalia Solián (Huesera) carries the film with her silent sleepwalking incarnation. As beautiful as a Mariana Enriquez short story, Tormento uses fantasy as a mirror for psyche, guilt and urban anxiety. The surprise success of last winter’s Mexican box-office.
